How many times do you purchase a small fragment of pulsing xenia? It’s pretty cool in the quarantine tank so you get one. Fast forward three months and you come home to discover that half of your live rock are now covered with xenia. Sound familiar? For most hobbyists, it is. What starts out innocently enough turns into a ravenous beast taking over your live rock.
It doesn’t behave like any other plant; it behaves like colony of organisms trying to dominate its environment. The problem isn’t just fast growth. Growth is exponential and our intuition can’t anticipate what that will look like until it’s too late (and the problem become large).
How to Control Xenia Growth
If you guess that you started with a small patch, that’s less accurate than estimating how many stalks you began with or how much surface area was covered. When you enter those values into the calculator at the top, it calculate them for you. There’s no need to try to calculate compounding growth across multiple months in your head. Simply decide if you want it to count total surface area or number of stalks. In a thick mat, counting stalks isn’t accurate and quite hard. Measuring square inches of rock being covered make it easier to predict what will happen.
Because xenia doesn’t exist alone, the tool adjust that baseline according to conditions in your tank. Xenia reacts to light, flow, and nutrients but it does so more quickely than other corals. Elevated nutrient levels can increases the growth multiplier up to almost 20%. That difference can transform an innocent error into a containment crisis. This can happen before you even see any sign of stress such as closed polyps.
Growth is surprisingly affected by flow. Common sense tell us that higher flow removes more nutrients from the coral which starves it. But generally speaking, slow and steady wins race. This means gentle, changing flow tends to promote faster growth then strong, direct blasts or stagnant areas. You can see this in the reference table on the page. Indirect or moderate flow can be quicker than spots where debris builds up, clogs the coral stalk, etc. People tend to think that stronger flow equals better for the reef. In the case of xenia though, consistency not strength help it thrive. Gentle water motion plus stable parameters allow xenia to spread easy. It’ll provide a way for holdfasts to get to new places.
But remember; pruning isn’t just about looks; it’s also about control. Nothing slows it down as effectively as removal. If you let it grow to where it contacts a different piece of rock then it’s too late. By that point, the interior structure has woven itself into adjacent rock. Removing it will be ugly and hurt both coral. Instead, you need to think ahead and remove some of its growth each week or two. Don’t let it go much past covering less than eighty percent of your defined space. Use the calculator to see where you’re at. It’ll tell you how many square inches or stalks to cut away in order to reset the growth timer. That’s a change from panicked reactivity to planned upkeep.
You should of used it earlier. Treat xenia like a garden rather than a decoration. It’s not a static decoration. It needs to be managed. You need to know how much space it takes up and how big it grow. You must also cut it back before it consumes your aquascape. Without math, there’s no guessing. And without discipline, you won’t have the tank you want.
Once you realize that corals grows in an environment and with time, you don’t fight the coral. You manage the conditions instead. If you confine that little frag in your rock layout, it will always stay beautiful.
