Your best defense is to test. For SPS corals, success is evidenced by a faint yellow or clear water as shown by the color chart. The reagents are only part of testing; how you test is just as important. I know many folks do their comparison in bright blue LED lighting in their tanks, which realy messes with your color perception. That blue shift might hide a real change, making something yellow look more neutral. For an honest read you want natural daylight. Take the vial out into natural sunlight (away from direct sun glaring on the glass) and you can tell what’s going on in the water. Do this daily at the same time. You’ll develop a good trend line to catch changes gradually before things turn into crisis.
When you know your levels are high, be patient and precise when making corrections. Phosphate scrubbing media like iron oxide granules will binds phosphate chemically to itself, removing it from the water column. The natural alternative is using a refugium filled with macroalgae that will absorb excess nutrients as they grows. Harvesting the macroalgae removes the nutrients permanently from the system. Diluting what’s left over can come in the form of regular water changes as long as you’re replacing that water with pure RO/DI water. Prevention and removal, it’s a balancing act.
If you master the control of phosphates, you’ll change the way you look at the tank. You won’t do emergency water changes because there is some algae outbreak anymore, but instead start to understand the chemistry shift prior to seeing it visibly. Your corals becomes vibrant again and thrive as opposed to fade away because they no longer has to expend energy just trying to survive. That clear reading you get from your test vial isn’t just a number on a chart…it’s the backbone for that healthy ecosystem. Pay attention to the little things. It’s how your tank tells you what it wants more better well before you’re in trouble.
