White spot disease, also known as ich, requires patience more then aggressive treatment. This disease, which are caused by a parasite called *Ichthyophthirius multifiliis*, is very common in the hobby, especially for beginning aquarist who tend to panic and throw all kinds of chemicals into their tanks. Before trying to kill this parasite, you must first learn about its life cycle.
Effective Treatment Methods For Ich White Spot Disease
Understanding the Ich Life Cycle
The reason most folks fail? Because they quit too early. Seeing those white spots dissapears makes them think it’s over, wrong!
That’s just the tip of iceberg. What you can’t see in the water column or on other tank surfaces is what poses the true danger, it will infect your fish again. Picking a “miracle” drug isn’t as important as the fact that effective treatment require good timing and temperature control.
Knowing the lifecycle alters your perception of the outbreak. There are three different stage for the parasite. Trophont; That’s the attached stage that you’re seeing.
It’s attached to the fish, eating off the fish (skin/mucus). No way to kill this one because it’s protected by the fish. The theront is the free swimming stage.
This is the vulnerable stage. A tomont is the encysted stage that hides and reproduces on pieces of filter media, decorations, or other items. This is why most meds will only kills the free swimming stage.
So you need to treat the tank multiple times until you break all cycles of parasite.
Using Heat to Treat White Spot
The easiest solution is usually just to crank up the heat. Typically, ich is a cool water disease.
It love temps between sixty-five and seventy degrees. Gradually raising them to eighty-two, eighty-four degrees are fine with most of your tropical fish. The warmer water accelerates its life cycle.
Tomonts hatch quicker. Trophonts fall off quicker. Sounds backwards I know, but a faster cycle actually means the parasite has less time under protection and more time exposed where you can kill it or treat it.
Simply raise temperature gradually. Don’t try to shock the tank and jump ten degrees in one hour. If the infestation is heavy, and/or the fish are just too sensitive to heat alone, medication will be needed.
Chemical Medications and Aquarium Salt
Common medications used for general ich treatment usually contains either formalin or malachite green. While effective, these medications is harsh chemicals that have their own set of tradeoffs. Malachite green may stain glass/plastics and may also be harmful to sensitive invertebrate residents such as snails or shrimp.
Watch out if you have a planted tank. The meds can burn off the more sensitive plants, and they can also kills beneficial bacteria in your filter. Always read the dosage directions on the bottle.
Overdosing will kill your livestock while underdosing won’t do anything. Salt, Some people swear by this. Salt, specifically aquarium salt, is a gentle yet effective treatment that stresses the water balance of the parasites making their surroundings less comfortabley.
It’s also safe for most invertebrates and plants (as opposed to malachite green or copper). It’s just a bit slow though, which means potentially a longer wait time until success. Also note that some fish species aren’t fans of salt.
Livebearers and discus tolerate it fine while scaleless fish and catfish typically don’t. If you’re thinking about using salt, know your fish first.
Consistency and Completing the Treatment
Don’t make this critical mistake by quitting treatment before all the spots are gone.
Catch any late hatching tomonts by continuing treatment for 3-5 more days beyond the disappearance of the last remaining spot. If you quit when the fish appear clean, you’ll miss that final wave of infection and the spots will reappar in a week’s time. Start over… again.
It’s exhausting. Make plans for two weeks of treatment. It is boring and repetitive, but it works.
Intensity isn’t as important as consistency. Don’t combine treatments with different meds in the hopes that something special will happen (usually not). Single out an approach.
Increase the temp. Add the med. Wait.
Observe fish behavior for any stress indicators. Maintain water stability while doing so. Minimize water changes unless you have waste that needs removing.
You shouldn’t of dilute the medication too fast. Soon enough, the white spots goes away. The tank become clear again.
Your fish are back to their normal selves. The real cure? Patience.
