Why Goldfish Change Color

A good Ryukin has to have equal amounts of white and red that don’t fade out to muddiness around the edges. The colors should not fades around the fins, either. That takes a trained eye. Even if you’re not trophy hunting, it helps you know what a healthy, well-bred fish looks like in store. Look for patterns that are sharply defined and colors that is clear.
So what pigments does a goldfish have? That’s determined by genetics. As the picture explains, there are cells called chromatophores (pigment cells) that make color. Erythrophores make orange/red and xanthophores makes yellow/white colors. Melanophores make the black color of fish like the Black Moor. These cells work together to form the overall image you see in your tank.
So why do they change color over time? A fish with heavy melanophore action may be dark at first, but fade as it gets older. What happens is fry (baby fish) will be olive or some other color to protect themselves from being seen. It takes a while for them to get into their adult colors, sometimes as long than a year. That’s why so many people freak out when they open the bag and the fish doesn’t look like it did on package. Be patient until they settle down. You should of been prepared.
As for genes; it’s not only about genes but also environment. Faded colors? Maybe your tank isn’t bright enough for those pigments to develop. Feeding krill or spirulina that are high in carotenoid content may help make the orange/red colors even more intense. Stress (especially temperature) can mess up those cells, causing them to be less vivid temporarily. It is very tricky.
If you want vibrant colors, provide constant, stable conditions but remember that you don’t control the genes. Nature does. Don’t use crazy lighting and harsh chemicals to force the fish to change color. Feed them well. Keep water clean. Let nature take its course.
