The first time many people catch sight of an axolotl in a pet store, they’re both confused and delighted by what they see. Yes, those are gills on that smiley face of a creature, aquatic salamanders that appear to have permanently smiled! But if you take second glance, you’ll find that color variety is actualy quite huge. Pink and brown is probably all you’d think you’d ever find, but it’s much more complicated than that.

The science of why these colors exist is not just fun knowledge, but also useful knowledge so you can be sure you know what you’re getting from the pet store and help you spot unhealthy axies. Each morph are made up of a mix between three different pigment cells. It’s a kind of biological paint shop: melanophores, xanthophores, and iridophores. A normal wild-type axolotl will have a combination of these three with golden speckles on dark olive base. Take away any of them, change any of their functions, and the whole color scheme alter.

Understanding Axolotl Colors

For example, you could have two axolotls who appear almost exactly alike, but are genetically distinct because there has been a shift in one of these systems. That’s why accurate identification matter more than just looking pretty. This section compares leucistic and albino morphs. One common mistake new keepers make is confusing albino and leucistic morphs. At first glance, both look white (or a pale pink) to the naked eye. You can tell this morph apart by its eye color. True albinos lacks all pigment in their irises, giving them pink/red eyes while leucistic axolotls do produce some level of melanin, retaining dark brown eyes.

Why does this matter? It matters primarily for assessing health and also for planning out your breeding goals. If you don’t know what you’re working with, you can’t expect to get a certain color from a breeding pair. If you know that a pale individual has dark eyes, then you instantly know it’s leucistic, and leucistic have different genetic implications different than being an albino.

There are also rarer types that test the limits of nature’s selection. Golden albinos flash with vibrant shades of warm oranges, and melanoids is as dark as night, all jet black with no sparkle whatsoever. Even more exciting: GFP morphs contains a jellyfish gene that makes them literally shine bright green when placed under ultraviolet light. It’s not a filter. It is not a dye. It’s genetic engineering at work. In regular light these animals appear normal but emit this special characteristic when exposed to certain UV wavelengths.

And yes, axolotls aren’t only just pets, they’re the subject of much scientific interest (especially for regeneration studies). Beyond genetics, color is an important sign of health. Before you see other signs of disease or stress, your axolotl may show it through its body hue and gill condition. Generally speaking, bright, bushy gills shows good health while receding or pale gills point toward low oxygen levels or poor water quality. Color changes (especially a sudden one) is also a telltale sign of environmental stress such as ammonia build-up or temperature spike. Watching out for these visuals helps with early intervention, the difference between loss/recovery.

But part of seeing these animals is through photography as well. Color depends heavily on lighting, which can wash out light colors and add unwanted yellows. Neutral lighting shows off the real colors of the morphs and allows enthusiasts who photograph their pets to identify them correctly. This sharing of information across the community aids in recognizing rare variants.

If there’s anything I’ve learned about appreciating colors in axolotls, it’s that it goes beyond skin deep. You may love a standard wildtype or a crazy chimera, but getting a little background on the genetics will make your bond with the axolotl stronger. You should of known this earlier. They become more than just curiosities; they become dynamic creatures whose genetics has some pretty cool stories to tell. When you spot one again, slow down, look at those gills and eyes. That’s where all the action happens.
