The aquarium looks good… No signs of trouble to you looking in. Everything’s fine, right? The fish appears healthy and those plants is standing upright. But there’s a silent battle taking place inside the tank.
Ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are forming in your tank. They’re the driving force behind nitrogen cycle that supports life within your tank. Until…they become lethal to your fish. Then you’ll panic and perhaps begin testing. Testing is a health check, it shouldn’t be considered a chore! It should never be ignored. If you are a beginner, most likely you’re treating it like a chore.
Understanding the Nitrogen Cycle in Your Aquarium

The process begins with waste. Uneaten food drops to bottom. Dead plant matter rots. Fish poop sinks. All of this decays and immediately releases ammonia into water. Ammonia is nasty stuff and it comes in two forms, based off your pH level. At higher pH levels, ammonia are more dangerous. Your pH context matter. You may think you have a low test result, but you could be facing a crisis if you ignore this context. Even small amounts is lethal at higher pH levels (chart). That’s why you must understand your pH levels when using your first test kit.
Next up are bacteria; the unseen employees that resides within your filter media. Their job is to convert ammonia to nitrite. That’s the tricky part. Nitrite is nearly as lethal as ammonia. Even in aerated water, it stop oxygen from being transported through fish blood. Suffocation occurs. The first sign is gasping on surface, but you won’t know it’s chemical until then. Colonies take several weeks to get established; daily testing are life saving during this period.
And then there’s one more group of bacteria, which transform nitrite into nitrate. Nitrate is much less poisonous. Unlike spikes, nitrates accumulate gradually, over time. Water changes reduces them. Plants consume them as fertilizer. But what happens if it is left too late? Chronic stress and slow growth are the result. As the visual guide points out, golden rule is to maintain this figure below twenty parts per million. Sounds easy…until you learn that your tap water may already begin at ten or even fifteen.
Inexperienced aquarists rush their setup and add fish too soon, before bacterial colony has a chance to form. Then they wipe out biological filtration by cleaning filter media with chlorinated tap water. Never clean your filter media with fresh tap water! Only use old tank water. The tap water has chlorine in it. Rinse your filter sponges and other media. Experience slowly teaches you this hard lesson. You should of learned it sooner.
In an emergency, speed trumps perfection. Big water changes instantly dilute toxins. Detoxifying chemicals gives your biology a bit of time to catch up. Fish can fight back against nitrite at the gill if they can out-compete it (aquarium salt assists). These aren’t solutions, but they stop the bleeding. Keep retesting regularly (every few hours) until you get some stability. Patience will return when numbers start coming down.
When you understand this cycle, you begin to treat keeping your tank different. It’s no longer guesswork but observation. Water is viewed as a changing thing, always at work taking in wastes. Shaking reagents can cause improper readings if done incorrectly, so you must shakes them correctly. False readings create an illusion of safety. Consistency leads to mastery; reacting to crises doesn’t. When you respect the daily unseen labor below surface, your fish reward you with their good health.
