💡 Overwintering Tip: In cold climates, goldfish hibernate at the pond bottom. Maintain at least 3 ft depth so the bottom stays above freezing even when the surface ices over. A pond de-icer helps with gas exchange.
💡 Filtration Tip: Your pump should turn over the full pond volume at least once per hour. Add 10% extra flow if you have a waterfall to compensate for head pressure. Heavy plants provide natural biological filtration and can reduce pump needs by about 15%.

Pond is a tiny, calm body of water that sits on the ground. It forms when water gathers in low holes in the soil. That can happen naturally or by means of human work.

They are much more small than lakes, although there are no strict rules to separate them clearly. Commonly one tells them apart by depth: Pond is usually less deep. Because of its low depth plants can cover the bottom from one side to the other.

What Is a Pond and How to Build One

The line between Pond and lake sometimes becomes unclear. Some bodies of water are obviously lakes, because they are both big and deep. Others clearly are Pond, because they are small and shallow.

Even so there is a gray zone between those two. The funny thing is, that if one considers only the depth, some Pond could fit as lakes in the middle of the summer, when seawdees block the light that arrives to the bottom.

Pond is too little to have a coast. The word “Pond” sometimes is used wrong to describe the Atlantic Ocean. Such informal uses make the ocean sound more little and less impressive, as if one shortens the distance between places.

Building a backyard Pond is a liked project. A lined Pond keeps the water in its place, although a bit of water even so dries up or is used by plants and creatures. Unlined Pond is more sensitive.

Unless the soil is made up of clay, the water simply seeps into the surrounding ground, and the Pond will knot stay full. Because of that, while digging one can choose hand work, use of horse drawn plow or use of a bulldozer. Lining a Pond with clay is a good method that fits well with nature.

Pond can work as a whole tiny ecosystem. Plants, Goldfish, insects and various creatures that come to visit give it an alive feeling. Crop rows around the banks give shelter for birds, especially when they thirst and feel at risk.

Using native plants is a wise idea. Gentle slopes help the creatures climb from the water easily. It also matters to watch for mosquitoes.

Backyard Pond can be set up with fountains, pumps and parts to create water features that attract wild animals. Bigger Pond even work for swimming, farming and fishing. Some folks build raised Pond or above ground setups with ready made Pond.

Others favor an in ground style with a fall. Home Pond is another option to keep fish like koi and Goldfish during the whole year. Cold season brings its challenges, with ice cover on the surface andtubes that can freeze, so careful attention during winter is needed.
