Fish aficionados are constantly striving to create the best possible environment for their pets.
As lovers of these animals, all they want to see is their beloved pets living as well and long as possible.
When it comes to the tiger barb, there is a series of factors that can impact both life quality and length.
Lifespan Of The Tiger Barb
Being one of the most popular freshwater fish, the tiger barb is easily identifiable through the remarkable colors and the thick lines drawn on their bodies.
Also, regarding their behavior, tiger barbs are considered to be some of the most active fish. But how many years does a tiger barb live?
Answering the question, tiger barbs normally live for 6 years in most captive environments.
That length, however, can be extended depending on the circumstances in which the fish lives.
Just like with any other fish, the conditions of the water, the size of the tank, temperature, and what they eat will directly influence the quality and the length of tiger barbs’ lives.
1. Water Conditions
Should you expose your tiger barb to poor water conditions, for instance, there is a good chance they will end up suffering from stress or even contracting diseases.
As the fish is constantly intaking water, should there be toxins, dirt, or any other harmful particles in it, the odds your fish will get sick will be extremely high.
The same happens for humans and the dirty air we breathe that brings us all sorts of lung problems.
2. Tiger barb food
An unbalanced diet can also negatively affect the lifespan of your tiger barb and help spread diseases.
As the fish needs the proper nutrients to fight possible infections, feeding it poorly is the same as betting on the illness.
Besides, make sure your tiger barb is getting enough proteins, vegetables, and other necessary nutrients so it can live healthy and long.
Normally I will choose the fish food that is suitable for tiger barb as shown in the image below:
(There is an image of a tiger barb on the food package makes me feel the food is suitable, just joking)
3. Size of Tank
As for the size of the tank, it doesn’t have to be an enormous one for your tiger barb to have enough room to swim.
Too many fish in the same tank can also lead to a stressful life, which might also affect the feeding and other aspects of the lives of fish.
Moreover, large tanks resemble natural spaces more and this can also help the fish itself develop in a more natural way.
As you can see from the image below, there are way too much tiger barb in a tank, normally only fish shop will do this as it will cost lots of money to buy these amount of Tiger barb.
4. Hiding Places
However, hiding places are never enough for this kind of fish. They just can’t get enough of them.
It’s never enough to remind fish owners that overcrowding aquariums is a terrible idea as fish love having room to swim around and places to hide.
5. PH value of the tank
Mind the pH of your aquarium and you can easily get one of the PH test kit at the aquarium shop.
The freshwater master test as shown in the image below is a must have for most fish keeper.
Conclusion
So, having a tiger barb is definitely a great idea if you’re looking for a beautiful and low-maintenance pet.
Lastly, regarding the lifespan of tiger barbs, they are definitely above the three-to-five-year average, or maximum 6 years for this kind of freshwater pet fish, which is what you should expect.
However, if this is too little time for you, try going for a goldfish or a Koi, which can easily live 20 years.
Koi fish is great for your consideration too!
