It looks like a cartoon, or at least an internet meme: a fish riding a bicycle. What could be more absurd? It’s a visual joke on that expression: to go with the flow.

Looking at biomechanics tell us something about how unforgiving world is for animals in water. A fish can’t walk on land. At least, they’re not designed for it.

Placing a fish on a bicycle seat isn’t simply unwise; it’s directly against their need to stay alive. To pedal a bike require dry skin and an upright body posture, two things that is lethal to a gill breathing animal. Why even think about this?

Is it just a metaphor for wasteful human training techniques in cycling? Or maybe consider taking it at face value to see where biology stop adapting. To me it’s a good reminder of just how specialized fish are to their habitat.

Why Fish Cannot Breathe on Land

Air cause their gills to dry out. Buoyancy come from water. That alone make the world of fish in water and the world of humans on land completely different than.

It’s like saying I want you to run a marathon with your lungs full of water. They can’t do it. The disconnection is complete, and results are instant.

A fish’s gills need a continuous supply of oxygenated water. The fragile gill filaments can’t work on land; they collapses and stick to one another. Why?

Because water hold up their tissue structure. Air causes them to dry up and fuse together. If there is no water, they lose most of their available surface area for gas exchange.

Suffocation doesn’t lend itself to pedaling. Within seconds, the fish would be panicked, using its final energy resources. Stamina isn’t a factor here; this is a failure of physiology at it’s most basic level.

Buoyancy and Structural Incompatibility

Instead of being a means of transportation, the bike turn into a torture device. Another thing the fish absolutely depends on is buoyancy. Their bodies are neutrally buoyant in water.

It is like gravity take over when you sit on a bike seat. Fish have no skeletal structure to hold up their weight off the ground. Most fish do not has weight bearing ribs.

Setting one on a hard surface would likely cause internal injuries just from its own weight. A soft seat won’t help a body meant to float deal with gravity. Just the mechanical stress itself make it a pointless endeavor that is cruel.

Lack of Limbs and Motor Control

Balance and coordinated limb movements is all part of the cycling skill set. Fins vs. Limbs. Fin-based movement rely on waving the body through a dense fluid.

There’s no way that would work with air, which is far too thin to offer enough pushback. Weight shifting to keep one balanced on two wheels? No chance.

Handlebars to hold onto? Not gonna happen. Neurological coordination for cycling?

Nope. The system just isn’t there. They lack the necessary motor control system, whether they are walking on two leg or four.

All the required complexities of riding a bicycle don’t exist in fish biology. The speed aspect isn’t much more hopeful. Fish is often quick in the water relative to how dense the water is.

Environmental Risks and Speed

Quick in the air? Not so much. If you had a bike going five miles an hour it would quickly be creating a wind tunnel effect which would dry out the fish.

It is faster then they can withstand. And as the water evaporates off the gill and the fish’s skin, it will rob them of moisture too fast for them to keep up with. The ocean or pond keeps them cool and moist.

But on the open road they are exposed to something that is deadly. The bike doesn’t make them quicker; it just exposes them to a whole new set of environmental risks. It teaches me something about not pushing nature past its naturaly limits.

Evolutionary Specialization and Habitat Limits

In fiction, we tend to give animals human abilities. We think it’s funny to imagine fish riding a bike or a cat driving a car. The truth is, however, more strict.

Every animal has evolved to fit into a niche and is optimized for it. A fish is alive, agile and efficient in water. Outside of water, it’s awkward and forced.

To try to put a fish in a human way of thinking are a mistake. It forgets what the necessary elements of its existence are. In short, although a cycling fish may still be a good laugh, it’s not a pretty sight at all.

Environmental exposure combined with physical trauma and eventual suffocation is no way to go through life. Slower. Harder.

Fatal. Leave the fish in the tank; leave the bike on the road. Fish are better suited for keeping their internal rhythm ticking in their own lane.
