Why do those pesky algae blooms keep coming back? You’ve got a planted tank. You maintain it diligenty. You test water. You add some fertilizer. A week later, there’s the green slime crawling all over your hardscape again. You’re doing everything right on the surface level, yet it’s still happening. What’s going on?
In most cases, it’s not what you think. Just a little chemical misunderstanding that catches even experienced aquarists off guard. Most likely, you’re confusing phosphate with elemental phosphorus. These are two similar measurement, but they behave quite different in your tank. This important difference is illustrated in the chart above which also demonstrates why laboratories and aquarium kits uses two very different languages.
The Difference Between Phosphate and Phosphorus
When a lab reports test results, they do so in terms of elemental phosphorus… Simply the raw atom found on the periodic table. Aquarium test kits, on the other hand, report levels of orthophosphate; the ionized version dissolved in water that’s actualy eaten by plants. The molecule adds significant weight from oxygen atoms, such that one part elemental phosphorus is about equal to three parts phosphate.
That conversion change how you understand every part of the results. When your municipal water report indicates no detectable phosphorous in your tap at zero point five milligrams per liter, your aquarium kit will tell you something closer to one and a half milligrams per liter of phosphate. Failure to account for that conversion factor could of result in three-hundred-plus-percent error when dosing.
The math isn’t simply something for math homework. Rather, it’s understanding the ratio to control things that grow in your tank. Phosphate is required by plants for both cell division and energy production, but there’s a limit. If you don’t have enough phosphate, then your plant will struggle. They will have stunted growth and purple undersides on leaves as they scramble to get nutrients to the newest shoot rather than oldest leaves.
If you have too much phosphate, your light and/or your carbon dioxide aren’t perfectly balanced and it will feed algae much quicker different than your plants. For most freshwater planted tanks, the sweet spot is between.5 and 2 milligrams of phosphate per liter. Nitrate is much more visible than other substances at high levels and easy to measure, which is why most hobbyists only consider this nutrient. Phosphorus is frequently the limiting nutrient in any aquatic ecosystem.
Dosing fertilizer isn’t just providing food for plants. You’re changing chemistry of the whole biological environment. Dumping lots of phosphate without regard to current nitrate levels will throw off the natural relationship between those two nutrients, the result can be an invitation for certain algal species to run amok.
For example, cyanobacteria loves excess phosphate compared to available nitrogen. Green water algae typicaly blooms when there is too much nitrogen and too little phosphate. It’s primarily a mind game. Instead of treating each problem in your tank one by one, think of it more like a chemistry equation. If you have algae, don’t go out and blast it with some treatment. Go back to the root cause. Do you have too many fish and are over-feeding them? Does your tap water contain lots of polyphosphate that was added by utility to prevent pipes from corroding? Did you misread your lab report and now undosed?
And the best way to detect these changes before they turn into obvious catastrophes? Test regularly. Don’t look at one data point. Look at multiple data points and see what trend emerges from weeks of testing. If things seem stable and your fish and plants is thriving, don’t mess with it. There’s no need to hit a perfect number on Tuesday. A better metric is to have sufficient phosphate in the water such that your plants aren’t starving. But it should not be enough to feed all the algae strain listed in the genus guide.
That’s a fine line but once walked successfully, it transforms a weak tank into an ecosystem full of life. Maintain the tightness. Watch those ratios. Let the chemistry serve you instead of fighting against it.
