You glance into your aquarium and notice it’s filled with beautiful, healthy looking plants. There’s also a little yellow vial sitting in the corner. You begin to wonder whether you’re harming your fish. Then you read the directions and discover yellow-green is okay. This is okay as long as your fish aren’t gulping air on top of tank.

This might be too simple an explanation for what is happening. Carbon dioxide injection is often viewed as a risky attempt. Anything other than green must mean there is a problem. Here’s why the explanation is easier once you grasp chemical basis for color shift.

How a drop checker operates are really quite simple. There is a fixed level of alkalinity in the drop checker solution. That removes variable of the chemistry of your tank’s water. As the carbon dioxide enters the vial, it will continue until internal pressure equals the external pressure. That will take an hour or two. There is no useful information five minutes after you start system. When the carbon dioxide begin to dissolve the indicator turns yellow.

What you are looking for is consistency, not perfection. You’re trying to get the indicator to be a steady green which means it’s balanced. Green means safe for your fish and sufficient food for your plant. So what does it mean when the checker turns green? The good news is that it is usualy 20-30 ppm carbon dioxide. That’s where plants grow well but don’t stress your animal.

When the checker goes dark blue it means your plants needs more carbon. They’ll get by for a while as they slowly adapt. You may notice some algae on the glass or melting leaf. It is not an emergency to the fish, just gradually increase your regulator adjustment. Go slow.

If it turns bright yellow you’ve got dangerous amounts. The excess CO2 reduces your pH too fast and can be harmful to your fishs breathing. Turn it off immediately. Try to increase surface agitation to blow out the excess gas.

A big mistake I see a lot of folks making is that they’ll use pH tests to estimate their CO2, but that’s wrong. Your pH are influenced by things different than CO2. For example, respiration of your fish and decaying organic matter can also decreases your pH. So now you think you’re fighting high carbon dioxide, but in reality you just have dirty water. Your drop checker eliminates the confusion. Since it creates a controlled environment, you know exactly what your plants is getting (the carbon dioxide).

Why does it matter? Because treating symptoms with bad data give you additional problems.

It’s easy to maintain. It doesn’t need much care other than swapping out the solution every few weeks to prevent drift from evaporation or contamination. Store the vial in an area that isn’t exposed directly to light as it may damage indicator over time. Don’t store the vial near filter output, as water flowing around the filter could throw off balance.

After some time, you’ll be able to tell what each color mean. Slight changes aren’t always bad; most of the time they’re actualy harmless. If you notice tiny oxygen bubbles on your plants’ leaf surfaces, this means your nutrients, light, and carbon dioxide is doing their jobs. Green is only one piece of bigger picture. Trust what you see, make adjustments slowly, and allow tank to settle into its own rhythm.
