First, let’s say you purchase what you believe is a wild type axolotl. It doesn’t have the gold speckles of an actual Xochimilco wild type. Then you see that there is nothing on the water line so now you’re confused. Don’t worry, you’re not alone, there are lots of colors in the hobby now and distinguishing them is difficult for someone just getting started. That’s where visual guide comes into play.
By breaking down all those different color variants in terms of specific genetic expressions produced from three basic cell types, you begin to get an idea of why animals is the way they are. This changes how you look at your pet, shifting your perspective from arbitrary beauty standards towards biology. Iridophores reflect a metallic shine, xanthophores produce yellows/oranges, and melanophores produces darker colors. Basically each of these types represent some combination of these cells, either increasing their presence or taking them out of recipe.
How to Tell Axolotl Colors Apart
For example, the wild type has all three types of cell (hence its name!), producing a basic brown base color with flecks of gold. In contrast, the melanoid lack iridophores completely. So it’s matte black, lacking any sparkly effect of its shimmery cousins. Unfortunately many people mistake darkness for more pigment, but in fact darkness is really an absence of something in particular channels. Under good lighting, you can look closely at the axolotl’s skin and see its sparkle, since the wild type will always have a bit of sparkle but the melanoid won’t.
They have no melanin whatsoever, leaving them with stark white or golden bodies if there are some xanthophores in there too (albinos). It’s frequently mistaken for leucistic morph. This morph also lacks melanin, but it suppresses melanin production so that it still has dark eyes. The easiest way to distinguish between the two is by eye color: if they have red eyes, it’s an albino; if their eyes are black, its leucistic. Knowing that will save you from getting a mislabeled animal from an online seller who doesn’t understand the genetic difference and simply uses those words interchangeably.
In fact, knowing how to identify the differences correctly is important not only when making breeding plans, but when you’re trying to monitor health as well. That little detail show up loud and clear in the chart. Others (e.g., GFP variants) are not naturaly occurring. Instead, they are lab interventions where jellyfish genes has been introduced to cause them to glow green under ultraviolet light. It’s advanced science and has trickled down to hobby tanks over the past several decades as a result of carefully controlled selective breeding projects.
When viewed in regular household lighting, these fish appear completely ordinary; it’s only when exposed to a blacklight do they reveal themselves for what they truly are. Other special color patterns (e.g., chimera, piebald) occur due to far more complex developmental oddities and are not simply predictable genetic traits like recessive mutations. Because of this, they is not easy to reproduce. This is why they are so rare and hard to get consistently without working directly with dedicated breeders who know the potential pitfalls. Each is still, however, a one-of-a-kind beauty.
Beyond the color, the other critical aspect of keeping these salamanders healthy is that they are sensitive indicators of water quality due to their thin and porous skin. Beyond looking at body color, the condition of your axolotl’s gills tell you much more about how well they’re doing right now. A good indicator of your tank’s oxygen levels is the vibrant pink of the gill plume. Pale, or even shriveled gills will indicate there’s trouble, but the oxygen level isn’t the only thing you should of checking. Ammonia and nitrite need careful monitoring no matter what morphs you have, whether they’re rare enigmas or something as common as a leucistic.
Stress show up physically before it kills your fish. Knowing what “healthy” looks like for all colors provides you with a visual reference point to track any changes, so you don’t assume normal variation means something is wrong. So if you’re going to own an axolotl, realize that their appearance is only half the story and everything about maintaining them is up to you. This chart will help you start identifying them. However, the real challenge is managing the tanks.
You must make sure the delicate gill filaments has free-flowing water and that the tank is stable enough to support the odd biological quirks of these animals. Start with good water and you’ll end up with a happy salamander, and everything else follows from there… Including showing that color we originaly fell in love with.
