Take out your TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter, dip it in your tank water, and look at the little screen: numbers climb. That’s all there is to the test. And yet it may be most confusing part of keeping fish, why? You don’t see the stuff that isn’t there. These includes salts, minerals, and other thing. They aren’t objects. To many beginning aquarists, TDS becomes one more word to remember next to “ammonia” and “pH.” But knowing about TDS is to know how heavy the invisible stuff are in your tank’s water.
Why does this matter? This matters because, beyond affecting appearance and taste of the water, it affect the health of every living thing you keep. As the chart above illustrates, each species have its sweet spot in terms of dissolved solutes, translating complex science into something real for use in your tank. The nature of tap water also varies by time of year and where you live. Rain run-off will change municipal water; a drought will do same. Your tap water can be different every day! You can’t see this change but it is harmful to picky livestock.
Why TDS Matters for Your Fish
Some shrimps and other soft water fish relies on very low mineral content in their water to regulate their body fluids effectivly. Using regular tap water which has elevated dissolved solid concentrations force them to expend more energy just to keep up osmotic balance. Many hobbyists confuse clear water with healthy water. Water can appear perfectly clean while having elevated magnesium and calcium that is unacceptable to soft-water species.
The problem can be solved by serious hobbyists using reverse osmosis systems. Reverse Osmosis removes almost all dissolved solids, leaving you with a blank canvas. While pure RO water are biologically sterile and safe (near zero parts per million), as shown on the infographic, it’s not livable without adding minerals back into the water. It’s like purchasing flour and then choosing to make bread or cake.
Caridina shrimp, like Crystal Red shrimp, need a special low-mineral mix where they has adequate hardness for molting and alkalinity is kept close to zero. Neocaridina shrimp are more forgiving and tolerate a wider range of moderately higher mineral levels. As you can see on the chart, Caridina have more sensitive needs different than community fish. Achieving that takes patience and discipline. There’s no “dump a bunch of remineralizers in the tank and pray” approach here. Precision is necessary.
Adding too much too fast (even by a little) will cause osmosis that’ll kill your shrimps overnight. Slow but sure makes it better, adjust gradually over a span of days. That’s why many aquarists fail at this, they’re focused on the end result (target number), not the means (rate of change). Test before and after each water change so you can monitor how much your source water affect the general stability.
Having three-hundred parts per million in your tap water makes keeping a low-TDS shrimp tank challenging with constant mineral creep. How you use the meter will also determine its reliability. It’s important to calibrate monthly and clean the probe between every test. Without proper calibration, a meter that drifts will provide false confidence and cause you to make decisions based off inaccurate numbers. Taking multiple readings over several weeks will show trends you don’t see in one test.
Perhaps you find that your TDS increase over the summer due to evaporation concentrating whatever minerals remain. Using pure distilled water for refills counters this and doesn’t alter the chemical balance any more than it already was. This little daily routine will save you from much bigger headaches down the road. Once you have TDS under control, it’s no longer a guessing game, it becomes something you control.
It’s no longer about chance, but rather creating an ecosystem suitable for your livestock. Whether that’s hardy cichlids or cherry shrimp, being able to precisely dial-in the conditions means understanding just what’s dissolved in your water. These unseen minerals are often the determining factor between a thriving and a struggling tank. And when you see those lush green plant tips and successful molts in your shrimp, you’ll know why it’s worth of paying attention to the numbers.
