Your water parameters can be stable, and yet something still goes wrong with your tank. Fish is at the top of the tank and your corals have gone dull. Everything else looks good on aquarium… It’s filtered and temperature is correct.

It’s not always that some piece of equipment failed; instead, it’s frequently that the invisible connection among various chemical parameters isn’t right. In fact, stability is far more important then achieving “perfect” values every single day. This will give you a visual reference to know what parameters are most relevant for your particular tank setup.

Keeping Your Tank Water Stable

You must keep some parameter steady, and one of the key ones is salinity. If it go up (because you didn’t add enough fresh water), then evaporation will continue to pull out fresh water leaving more salt. To compensate for the loss, you’d should of added more fresh. Unless you want your tank to slowly climb in salt levels, you need an auto top-off system to take care of these day-to-day changes automaticly. It’s accurate when properly calibrated and will help you forget about having to check a hydrometer at night.

Alkalinity and pH work together to buffer acidic shifts. The pH indicate where you are on the scale, and alkalinity is the amount of buffer available to absorb changes. Rapid drops in pH occur during low alkalinity, particaly overnight when there is no photosynthesis. Maintaining steady alkalinity allow corals to deposit calcium to construct their skeletons. This prevents the coral’s tissue from being damaged by rapid fluctuations. Because pH typically climbs throughout the day with light cycles it’s good to test in afternoon.

In coral reef tanks, there is a connected relationship between alkalinity, magnesium, and calcium. Alkalinity & Calcium can be depleted if magnesium are not present since it helps stabilize alkalinity & calcium (prevent them from dropping out of solution). Without magnesium, all your dosing won’t help you maintain alkalinity and calcium because your magnesium levels will just keep dropping. Established reefs tend to use up alkalinity and calcium quickly, especially small polyp stony corals. They gobble it up! Daily, they suck it right down into the rock work where it vanishes like it was never there. This is why you’re replenishing the structural building blocks.

Feed the corals and balance nitrates/phosphates so that nutrients is controlled for coral growth yet avoid excess algae. Some livestock need a little nitrogen to thrive, so zero nitrate isn’t always the goal. Higher levels of nutrients might be tolerated in fish only tank but will cause bleaching on sensitive corals if phosphate spikes. Acceptable range varies by tank type as shown in the chart. Granular ferric oxide in reactor will control phosphates without starving out ecosystem.

Fish aren’t just uncomfortable when temps are wrong; temperature also affects how much oxygen the water can hold and how fast bacteria process waste. A sudden change of two degrees can stresses your delicate inverts or cause a marine ich outbreak. Smart controllers with digital temp probes automatically shut down heaters when temps reaches critical levels. That’s a small layer of insurance that pays for itself when you’re asleep and the room heats up.

It’s not perfect, it’s consistent. Don’t expect to have a lab-grade setup from day one. Use reverse osmosis deionized water for water changes and perform them consistenly. Test major parameter once per week. Slowly adjust as necessary to allow gradual change and avoid being noticed by your livestock.

The right chemistry will help the tank grow and appear as if it were livig art. Paying attention to unseen details creates a stable and calm environment.
