Fish Medication Chart

Maintaining the health of fishes requires a person to recognize when a sick fish is developing and to act before a single sick fish becomes a problem for all of the fish in the tank. Many individual only recognize the need to treat fish when there is a crisis with the fish in the tank. By recognizing when a fish is not healthy, however, an individual can take action to avoid such a crisis.

Furthermore, if individuals dont take action to treat a sick tank and to recognize these signs, the illness of only one fish can spread to all of the other fish in the tank, creating an unhealthy tank of fish. An individual must use the correct medication for each specific illness in the fish tank. For instance, you cant use the type of medication used to treat a case of white spot disease in a fish to treat a case of bacterial fin issue in that same tank of fish.

How to Treat and Prevent Sick Fish

Furthermore, the medication necessary for treating bacterial fin issues in a tank will not work for a case of fungal issues in those same fish. Thus, if an individual attempts to use the wrong medication for treating the illness, they can create additional problems for the sick fish, as they will waste medication and time to treat the illness of the fish. Another essential part of treating fish is the use of quarantine for the sick fish.

By placing the sick fish into quarantine, the healthy fish is protected from the illness of the sick fish. Furthermore, if an individual moves the sick fish to quarantine, the fish can be monitored while in isolation from the other fish in the tank. Additionally, placing the sick fish into quarantine will prevent other fish from attacking the sick fish and will ensure that the medication will work as intended for the sick fish.

Although the quarantine tank doesnt have to be complex, it is important that the water in the tank has the same temperature and aeration as the sick fishs tank. If an individual does not use quarantine for the sick fish, the fish may become stressed from the unhealthy environment and the illness in its tank, which can make the medication less effective. In order to create effective dosing protocols for the fish that are getting treated for there illnesses, an individual must test the water parameter before adding the medication.

Testing the water parameters will reveal if ammonia or nitrite is causing the illness of the sick fish. Additionally, an individual must remove activated carbon from the tank prior to adding the medications, as activated carbon will remove the medication from the water. Furthermore, an individual has to measure the medication correct prior to being added to the tank water.

If too much medication is added, the health of the tank and it’s fish will be at risk. Additionally, if too little medication is added, the illness will not be treated correctly. Finally, an individual should of complete the full course of medication, even if the sick fish begins to look healthy, as the illness may return.

Finally, there are additional steps that can be used to avoid the need for medication for the fish. For instance, an individual should avoid adding new fish to an established tank without first placing the new fish in quarantine for a period of time. Additionally, an individual should perform regular water change to avoid the susceptibility of the fish to illness.

Furthermore, providing the fish with a varied diet and using a filtration system in the tank will further aid in the healthy state of the fish. An individual should not combine different medications for the fish. The combination of medications may interact with each other.

These interactions may lead to the medications harming the fish or crashing the biological filter in the tank. Furthermore, an individual should finish the full course of one type of medication before beginning a second course of medication for the sick fish. After the last dose of medication is added to the tank, the fish should be watched for an additional one to two weeks.

By watching the fish during this period, an individual can ensure that the symptoms of the illness has fully resolved. Furthermore, by watching the fish during this time, the owner can be sure that the fish are healthy enough to return to the main tank. If the fish are rushed in there return to the main tank, their illness may return.

Thus, using each of these steps can avoid illness of fish. An individual can manage fish health by knowing each of these steps and following them to care for the fish proper.
